Tommies and Gophers Set to Return to Xcel Energy Center October 26

The University of St. Thomas and University of Minnesota men’s hockey teams are set for a rematch at Xcel Energy Center. For the second straight season, St. Thomas and Minnesota will square off in downtown Saint Paul on Saturday, October 26 with an 8 p.m. puck drop.

Fans may remember the first-ever meeting between the Tommies and Gophers last season at Xcel Energy Center, an instant classic overtime thriller. The Purple took the national runner-up Golden Gophers to the limit, ultimately falling in the extra period 6-5 in front of over 11,000 from the State of Hockey.

The October 26 game at Xcel Energy Center is presented by Wings Financial Credit Union. Tickets will go on sale on August 20. St. Thomas and Minnesota season ticket holders will have access to a priority presale starting on August 19.

The Xcel Energy Center matchup will close the weekend series after the Tommies and Gophers square off in Minneapolis at 3M Arena at Mariucci on October 25.

The 2023-24 season treated St. Thomas well, as head coach Rico Blasi guided his team to a Division I program-best second-place finish in the regular season after a 15-20-2 overall record and 12-11-1 record in CCHA play. The Purple continued their upward trajectory from two seasons ago with highlight wins against #8 St. Cloud State, Minnesota State, and Michigan Tech. One of their two starting goaltenders, Jake Sibell, was named a semi-finalist for the Mike Richter award and their captain, Lucas Wahlin, was the first Tommie in program history to receive All-CCHA honors. Both return to Saint Paul for this coming season.

“We are excited to play the Gophers again this upcoming season,” said Blasi. “It is a great opportunity to build on the excitement from last year’s matchup in one of the best hockey venues in the country.”
