Xcel Energy and Xcel Energy Center have teamed up to promote conservation, renewable energy and support for low-income energy assistance programs. Here are ten ways you can save energy and money in your own home:
1. Use ceiling fans to cool your home, allowing you to keep your thermostat setting higher as moving air feels cooler.
2. Raise your thermostat setting from 72 to 78 degrees to save approximately $100 in a summer.
3. Change your air conditioning filter to improve efficiency and the life of your AC.
4. Consider a whole house or attic fan to draw in cool nighttime air and force out hot air that builds up during the day.
5. Plant trees for shade to save up to 8% on cooling costs.
6. Open windows on cool nights and turn off your air conditioner.
7. Keep air conditioner coils dust-free to increase efficiency and lifetime use.
8. Match the output of your AC to the space you cool to ensure efficiency and comfort.
9. Provide shading for your air conditioning condenser to reduce cooling costs by nearly 3%.
10. Program your thermostat to coincide with your daily routine to save as much as 12% on cooling costs.
